Hypertufa is the best choice for container gardening. Tufa is a type of volcanic stone. It is light-weight, porous, and can withstand cold temperatures. It was a popular choice to make planters from, for use at high altitudes. After most tufa deposits became depleted and prices soared, a substitute was created. This is known as hypertufa, or just "Tufa". After researching different options for creating planters, Karma's Garden decided to use this recyclable material in our own organic container garden. There are different variations on the recipe for this cast stone, but making it yourself can be a fun project (some time and mess required). Besides having a great aged stone look, hypertufa is more eco-friendly than pure cement and is good for plants.
Hypertufa planters permit air flow to root systems, help plants conserve water, are lighter than cement or stone, and are more durable than terra cotta. They withstand cold temperatures, encourage plant growth, and can be recycled. If broken, hypertufa planters can be further broken down with a hammer, and reused as a soil conditioner. You can create a further patina by rubbing it with soil or peatmoss. If you coat the benches or planters with yogurt, it encourages moss growth, giving it an ancient look.
We also make custom colored hypertufa with eco-friendly soy-based tints, to accent your plants, landscaping walls, or home. This is a great way to give a stucco home an estately look. Please contact us for more details.
